Discovering Lake Tahoe: A Guide to Alpine Serenity

Explore Lake Tahoe’s serene beauty, from crystal-clear waters to majestic mountain views.

Discovering Lake Tahoe: A Guide to Alpine Serenity

Straddled between the borders of California and Nevada lies Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, famous for its strikingly clear waters and the majestic mountain panorama that frames it on all sides.

Each milestone birthday, my family flies out to celebrate this stunning natural wonder, making the most of Lake Tahoe’s beauty and charm. Our trips are usually in October, right after the summer rush and before the winter ski season. It’s the perfect time – quieter and more relaxed – allowing us to enjoy the lake with fewer crowds.

Getting There

Reaching Lake Tahoe can be an adventure in itself. The lake is about a 60-minute drive from Reno and a two-hour drive from Sacramento, so a car is essential. Our go-to is usually to fly into Reno due to its proximity to the areas we tend to stay around the lake.

Out & About

Drive Around the Lake:

There’s no better way to take in the breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe than by spending the day driving around its scenic shoreline. Along the way, make sure to stop at charming local shops and towns, snap some photos, or stretch your legs with a hike. The full drive around the lake spans 72 miles and typically takes about three hours to complete without stops—though you’ll definitely want to take your time to soak in the beauty.

Hiking at Emerald Bay:

Emerald Bay is one of Lake Tahoe's most breathtaking destinations, often referred to as the lake’s crown jewel. Its shimmering greens, turquoise waters, and stunning mountain backdrop make it a must-visit on the west shore. Located within Emerald Bay State Park, the area offers trails suitable for all levels, from leisurely strolls to more challenging hikes, each providing incredible views of the sparkling bay and rugged landscapes.

Heavenly Mountain Resort:

Heavenly Resort, situated on the California-Nevada border in southeastern Lake Tahoe, offers something for everyone, no matter the season. During the winter, it’s a premier destination for skiing and snowboarding, while the summer months bring opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, and scenic gondola rides. The gondola, accessible from the village center, takes you directly to the top, offering breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe along the way. Whether you’re chasing snow or sunshine, Heavenly has activities to suit every adventure seeker.

Casinos

No trip to Lake Tahoe with my family would be complete without a little time spent at the casinos. Here are our favorite spots in South Lake Tahoe:

Golden Nugget: Recently renovated, this casino quickly became one of our favorite spots to gamble during this trip.

Harveys: Owned by the Caesars brand, Harvey’s and Harrah’s are seamlessly connected by an underground tunnel. Harvey’s boasts a more modern vibe compared to Harrah’s and features several upscale dining options, including Wolf by Lisa Vanderpump, Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, and the Sage Room on the 19th floor, offering breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe.

Harrah's: Also part of the Caesars brand, Harrah’s is a classic choice, renowned for the unique feature of two bathrooms in every guest room. During our visits, we typically choose to stay here specifically for this added convenience.
