Unveiling the Charms of Zagori, Greece: A Travel Guide

Zagori, a treasure trove of untamed nature in Greece's northwest, was the highlight of my month-long European adventure.

Following a brief stay in Corfu, Greece, we embarked on a ferry voyage across the Kerkyra Channel, landing in Igoumenitsa. Here, we embarked on a 3.5-hour scenic drive through the mountains, heading to the serene Zagori region.

Zagori, a realm of 46 time-honored villages and two national parks - Northern Pindos Park and Vikos-Aoos National Park, home to the famed Vikos Gorge - is astoundingly untouched by mass tourism. Amongst the mountainous landscape, the essence of authentic Greece thrives in these millennia-old settlements. Stone footpaths interconnect each village, leading to awe-inspiring arched bridges that now serve as unique hiking routes spread across the region. Here are some highlights from the quaint villages that I had the opportunity to explore.

It's surprising, given the region's mesmerizing beauty, how it remains a hidden gem, bypassed by many travelers. Nestled within the mountains, these timeless Greek villages, with their millennia-old history, paint a vivid picture of tradition and heritage. A maze of stone footpaths connects each village, often leading to majestic arched bridges, which have now evolved into appealing hiking trails scattered across the region. Following are some of my curated recommendations from a few villages that I had the pleasure of visiting.

The Monodendri Village

Monodendri, which means 'single tree', owes its name to a lone, gigantic tree that once towered over the village square. Today, the village is a popular tourist destination due to its preserved stone architecture and the incredible views it offers of the Vikos Gorge.

One of the main attractions in Monodendri is the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi. This age-old convent, established in the 15th century, is a shining beacon of the region's rich past. Perched precariously on the edge of the Vikos Gorge, the monastery offers awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape. A visit to this place of solitude and meditation provides a unique opportunity to connect with the region's spiritual history.

The Monastery of Agia Paraskevi isn't just a historic religious structure, it's also a center for local arts. Within its sacred walls, local artists showcase their craftsmanship through hand-painted religious art. These pieces, created on-site, are available for purchase, offering you a chance to take a piece of Monodendri's spiritual heritage home with you.

Just behind the monastery, the views over the Vikos Gorge are truly something to behold. Known as the 'Grand Canyon of Greece', the gorge plunges dramatically beneath the monastery, offering a breathtaking vista that stretches out to the horizon. The stark contrast between the tranquil convent and the wild, untamed beauty of the gorge makes this an unmissable sight in Monodendri.

The Mikro Papigo Village

Mikro Papigo is a picturesque settlement that offers tranquility amid striking natural beauty. This stone-built village is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, a testament to its exceptional geological heritage and stunning landscapes. From any point in the village, you can admire the breathtaking views of the towering Tymfi mountain range that cradles Mikro Papigo.

One of the most delightful experiences in Mikro Papigo is a visit to the Astra Restaurant. This local gem is celebrated for its commitment to traditional Greek recipes, each dish beautifully crafted from fresh, locally-sourced produce. As you savor the authentic tastes of Greece, the restaurant's ambiance provides an intimate setting that perfectly complements the village's rustic charm.

In the heart of Mikro Papigo stands the Greek Orthodox Church of Taxiarchon. This architectural marvel, marked by its distinct bell tower and Byzantine influences, is a place of peace and worship. Its spiritual significance and the timeless beauty of its interiors make the Church of Taxiarchon a must-visit site in the village.

For a leisurely pause between your explorations, stop by the Koukounari - Coffee Shop & Country Market. This cozy establishment offers not only delicious quick bites and refreshing beverages but also a chance to sample local products. It's a perfect place to experience the village's warm hospitality while relishing the taste of locally made pastries and other delicacies.

The Tsepelovo Village

Tsepelovo holds the distinction of being the largest village in the area. This beautifully preserved hamlet, ensconced in a dramatic mountainous backdrop, offers an immersive taste of the Greek countryside. Its cobblestone streets and grand stone houses whisper tales of a bygone era, making it an enchanting stop on your journey through Zagori.

One of Tsepelovo's culinary highlights is a delightful eatery known as I Mikri Arktos. This restaurant is renowned for its superb selection of traditional Greek dishes, with the fried cheese being a particular favorite among visitors. Coupling the rich, comforting flavors of their food with a homely, welcoming atmosphere, I Mikri Arktos is a culinary experience not to be missed when in Tsepelovo.

The village square in Tsepelovo is a charming centerpiece of the community. Here, you can leisurely stroll through the heart of the village, taking in the simple pleasures of rural Greek life. Along the way, you'll encounter a variety of local shops, offering everything from handmade crafts and traditional goods to everyday essentials. Walking through the square offers an intimate glimpse into the local lifestyle and is a fantastic way to connect with Tsepelovo's rich culture and history.

The Koukouli Village

This village is renowned for its preserved architecture, historic stone bridges, and a fascinating folklore museum. However, what makes Koukouli truly distinctive is the Kôkkôriko or 'rooster's crow', a rare, natural phenomenon that happens here twice a year, when the sun and full moon rise and set at the same time.

During your stay in Koukouli, make sure to pay a visit to the Tritoxo Guest House & Restaurant. The menu features an array of traditional Greek dishes, thoughtfully prepared with an emphasis on local and fresh ingredients. The Vitsa Village

Famous for its traditional stone houses and age-old churches, Vitsa offers a serene escape from the bustling city life, making it a sought-after destination for those seeking tranquility and authentic Greek culture.

One of the top accommodations in Vitsa is the Kôres Boutique Hotel & Spa. This exquisite hotel offers a perfect blend of comfort, elegance, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges. While staying here, be sure to indulge in the hotel's excellent spa facilities and take a dip in the indoor swimming pool for a rejuvenating experience. To further enjoy the scenic beauty of Vitsa, dine at Στα ριζά, a local restaurant that offers spectacular views of the mountain ranges. Known for its delicious Greek cuisine, this eatery offers a gastronomic journey through traditional flavors set against the backdrop of the idyllic Zagori landscapes. Between the mouthwatering food and the picturesque setting, your experience at Στα ριζά will be nothing short of extraordinary.

Out & About:

Your exploration of the Zagori region isn't complete without a visit to Vikos Gorge, often referred to as the "Greek Grand Canyon." This dramatic landscape is characterized by its towering cliffs and dizzying heights, offering some of the most unforgettable views in the region. The gorge's beauty is a testament to the raw, untamed splendor of Greece's natural landscapes.

For those who enjoy hiking, the Beloi Viewpoint offers a challenging yet rewarding trek. The 1.7-mile out-and-back trail takes you to one of the best viewing spots in the region. Once there, you're treated to a panoramic view of the gorge that is absolutely breathtaking and well worth the effort.

Another adventurous activity that beckons is the hike up the Stairs of Vradeto. This stone path, comprised of 1200 steps and 39 turns, is an architectural marvel and one of the most iconic landmarks in Zagori. As you ascend, each step reveals more of the region's stunning vistas, culminating in a view that's simply unparalleled.

The Kokoris Bridge, one of the region's oldest stone bridges, is another must-see spot. Its traditional stone architecture, coupled with its picturesque setting, makes it a popular destination for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Make sure to take a plunge in the crystal clear waters of the Voidomatis River. This beautiful river is renowned for its remarkably clean, blue waters. Diving into its refreshing depths is the perfect way to cool down after a day of exploring, providing a fitting end to your Zagori adventure.

Zagori left us with lasting memories of engaging locals, mouthwatering Greek cuisine, and stunning landscapes in its charming villages. Our next stop is Athens, Greece, our final destination on this journey.
