Experience Central Park in the fall with a serene afternoon of row boating on The Lake.
There’s nothing quite like experiencing New York City’s Central Park in the fall. The air feels crisp, the trees are a vibrant colors of reds, oranges, and yellows, and the whole park seems to exude a cozy, picturesque vibe.
On a recent fall afternoon, as the leaves were deep in their seasonal transformation, I set out to experience one last fall activity before the chill of winter nudges us all indoors.
After a peaceful stroll down The Mall—a personal favorite, with its canopy of trees—I wondered through Bethesda Terrace. Walking here feels like stepping into a film, a place you’ve seen in countless movies, with the iconic fountain and terrace. And there, just beyond, lies The Lake.
I decided it was the perfect day for a rowboat adventure. Boating on the lake is an experience like no other—a blend of tranquility and charm that feels distinctly “New York.” Whether you’re looking to plan a romantic date, enjoy a family outing, or simply escape into a peaceful, solo adventure, Central Park’s rowboats offer a unique way to experience the park’s beauty from the water.
Central Park’s rowboats are available on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 AM to 4 PM. Renting a boat costs $25 per hour—a fair price for an afternoon of scenic relaxation. On a perfect fall Saturday, the line for boat rentals can get a bit long, but it’s worth the wait. However, because the boathouse operates seasonally, it’s always a good idea to check their hours before you head out.
Though it’s not strictly allowed, some people, like myself, like to bring a few special items to make the experience more memorable (just remember to be discreet!).
Here’s my must-have list for a picturesque afternoon on the lake:
Pack everything into a closed bag to keep it secure and hidden, so you can savor the moment without worry.
Once you’re on the water, be sure to paddle under the famous Bow Bridge. As you glide under its arch, you will enter the quieter side of the lake, where you can lose yourself in the park’s tranquil surroundings. This area feels worlds away from the bustling city beyond the trees.
Boating on The Lake in Central Park is a quintessential fall experience, and a perfect afternoon in the city.
Whether you’re a local looking to reconnect with the city’s peaceful side or a visitor eager to make lasting memories, a rowboat ride is a must-do.
