Exuma, Bahamas: A Paradise of Blue Waters and White Sands

Are you looking for a tropical getaway that boasts clear blue waters and powdery white sands? Welcome to Exuma, Bahamas, where the vivid blue waters meet the softest white sands you’ve ever set foot on. This small chain of islands in the Bahamas archipelago is the epitome of paradise, with its crystal-clear waters, secluded beaches, and vibrant marine life offering a unique island retreat unlike any other.

During one particularly chilly season back home, the idea of warm sands and sunny skies was too tempting to resist. So, a group of friends and I swapped our winter blues for the inviting blue of Exuma. It was a spontaneous decision, leading us to pack our bags, catch a flight, and dive headfirst into a blissful escape from reality.

Arrival in Paradise

Touching down in Exuma at the modest Exuma International Airport (GGT) on Great Exuma, the journey from the tarmac to the resort was nothing short of an adventure, hinting at the laid-back island life that awaited us. The only way to our destination was via taxi or a resort shuttle, setting the tone for what was to come.

Unforgettable Experiences in Exuma

Our days were a blend of relaxation and exhilarating adventures. Here’s a taste of what Exuma has to offer:

Swimming with the Pigs

A must-do that lives up to every bit of its fame. The friendly pigs at Big Major Cay aren’t shy about making friends or sharing your snacks. Swimming alongside these playful creatures was the highlight of our trip.

Iguana Encounters

The Northern Bahamian Rock Iguanas on Leaf Cay are a sight to behold. These protected species are as curious as they are colorful, offering a unique wildlife experience.

Aquatic Adventures

While we skipped swimming with nurse sharks, it remained a tempting option. However, feeding stingrays and holding starfish were serene interactions that connected us with the diverse marine life of the Exumas.

Boat Day

Renting a boat gave us the freedom to explore the stunning clarity of the water and the pristine beaches. We even discovered a private island where we could lounge, swim, and enjoy a vibrant beach party vibe, all to ourselves.

Culinary Delights and Nightlife

Although we rarely left our resort, we ventured out to Cocoplum Bistro, a charming spot where the flavors of the Bahamas and France meet. The beachside setting, combined with live music nights, made it a memorable part of our stay.

Staying at Grand Isle Resort & Residences

Our home for the week was the Grand Isle Resort & Residences, where we indulged in the luxury of a villa overlooking the ocean. The resort is a haven of amenities:

23° North Beach Club: A beachfront pool with cabanas and daybeds perfect for sunbathing and relaxation.

Emerald Reef Golf Club: Though we didn’t get a chance to play, this top-rated golf course is renowned throughout the Caribbean.

Dining Options: From the Grill House at 23° North with its breathtaking beach views to the casual Sandy Toes Jerk Hut, the dining experiences catered to every taste and occasion.

Safety and Recommendations

The island felt incredibly safe, but for peace of mind, especially at night, staying at a well-established resort is advisable. The sense of security allows you to enjoy the tranquility of the islands without a worry.

Exuma transcends the typical vacation spot; it's an unforgettable journey that resonates long after your visit. Here, each moment, whether it's unwinding on pristine beaches or enjoying close encounters with unique wildlife, deepens your connection with paradise. Whether your goal is to seek thrill, unwind in serenity, or escape the ordinary, Exuma offers an unparalleled experience that is as memorable as it is breathtaking.
