Experiencing the Thrills of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort
As soon as the first autumn chill hits the air, I know it’s time for one of my favorite events of the year: Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort. Now in its 33rd year, this iconic event has become a must for thrill-seekers and horror enthusiasts. It’s not just about the scares—although there are plenty of those—but the whole experience that keeps me coming back year after year.
What draws me back year after year isn’t just the pulse-pounding fear that comes with every scream or the masterfully crafted haunted houses that transport you into your worst nightmares. It’s the electrifying atmosphere, the shared laughter that follows a good scare, and the adrenaline that courses through you as you navigate the darkened corners of the park. Halloween Horror Nights is more than just an event—it’s a tradition, a communal celebration of all things spooky and spectacular.
But if this is your first time braving the event, I won’t sugarcoat it—it can be overwhelming. With 10 Haunted Houses, 5 Scare Zones, 1 Stage Show, and endless themed food and beverage options, there’s a lot to take in. But fear not! Below, I’ve shared some of my favorite things to do at Halloween Horror Nights, along with a few tips to help you make the most of your visit.
This Year’s Haunted Houses:
A Quiet Place: Based on the hit films, you’ll need to stay silent as monstrous creatures hunt you down. Every sound could be your last.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire: An ancient evil is unleashed, and only the Ghostbusters can save you from being frozen by Garraka.
Insidious: The Further: Enter the terrifying world of Insidious, where demons lurk and the Red-Faced Demon waits to pull you into his lair.
Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines: Saskia Van Helsing and the Bride of Frankenstein battle Dracula’s daughter and her monstrous allies in this epic showdown.
Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America: Guided by La Muerte, you’ll try to survive the night as you encounter three terrifying legends from Latin American folklore: Tlahuelpuchi, La Lechuza, and El Silbón.
Slaughter Sinema 2: Relive the horror of B-movie nightmares at the Carey Drive-In, filled with creature features and gory grindhouse films.
The Museum: Deadly Exhibits: A cursed spirit is unleashed from a folklore museum’s exhibit, and it’s coming for you.
Major Sweets Candy Factory: A field trip gone wrong when children are transformed into candy-coated killers at a factory.
Goblin’s Feast: Enter a goblin village where you’re on the menu at a sinister feast.
Triplets of Terror: The Barmy triplets are throwing a birthday party, and the theme is recreating the murder of their entire family—will you make it out?
Terrifying Scare Zones:
The scares don’t end with the haunted houses—Universal’s scare zones are equally frightening. Watch your back as scare actors stalk you through these eerie areas:
Enter the Blumhouse
Duality of Fear
Demon Queens
Swamp of the Undead
Torture Faire
Can’t-Miss Stage Show:
Nightmare Fuel: Nocturnal Circus is a dark and sinister circus where aerialists and pyrotechnics combine to create a spine-tingling spectacle.
Tips for First-Timers:
Get the Express Pass: If you can swing it, the Express Pass is worth every penny. It allows you to skip the regular lines, which can get pretty long, especially on peak nights.
Take Advantage of Stay & Scream Areas: If you have a regular park ticket for the day, hang around in one of the Stay & Scream areas. You’ll get early access to select haunted houses before the general crowd.
Plan Your Route: With 10 haunted houses and multiple scare zones, it’s easy to lose track of time. I recommend planning your route to avoid unnecessary backtracking and maximize your night.
Where to Stay:
Staying at a Universal hotel is the way to go. My favorite is Loews Sapphire Falls Resort, a Caribbean-themed hotel that offers convenient water taxi transportation to and from the park. During Halloween Horror Nights, the water taxis run extended hours, so you don’t have to worry about getting back late.
Food & Beverage:
Pizza Fries: This is my go-to snack every year. Imagine crispy fries topped with pizza ingredients—cheese, sauce, and pepperoni. It’s the perfect blend of guilty pleasure and comfort food.
Twisted Potatoes: Another must-try is the Twisted Potato, a fried, spiralized potato with your choice of seasonings like Sour Cream and Chives, Garlic Parmesan, or Seasoning Salt.
Dead Coconut Club: Located in CityWalk, the Dead Coconut Club is a great place to grab a themed cocktail before or after the event. It’s the perfect spot for snapping a few photos before heading into the frights.
Whether you're a long-time Halloween Horror Nights fan or experiencing it for the first time, the secret to enjoying the event is to fully embrace the fear, the fun, and the rush of excitement.
