Discover the magical charm of Corfu, Greece with its stunning beaches and laid-back atmosphere.
As our France adventure concluded, we embarked on a new journey towards Corfu, Greece. Our flight touched down during twilight, with the exhaustion of travel setting in. We found solace in our vehicle transfer, navigating us to our accommodation nestled in the northern stretches of the island. The subsequent morning, the captivating sight of an enchanting beach adjacent to our hotel lured us outside to explore the splendid terrain of Corfu.
Corfu, an island off the northwest coast of Greece, welcomes its visitors with an engaging blend of serene atmospheres and sandy beaches. This island gem is adorned with rugged mountains and sandy shorelines, offering plenty to see and experience.
Being interwoven with Greece's history, Corfu bears marks of its journey from the era of Greek mythology, through medieval times, and up to the 17th century. Withstanding several Ottoman sieges, Corfu stood as a beacon for European states against the Ottoman Empire, earning recognition as one of Europe's most fortified territories.
To fully experience Corfu's breathtaking landscape, consider renting a boat for a day's excursion. The Kontokali Bay Resort & Spa, our selected accommodation, provides the convenience of boat rentals right from the hotel. There's nothing like the exhilarating feel of the sea breeze and the panoramic views of Corfu's scenic coastline.
Venture through the cobblestone alleys of Corfu's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, steeped in history tracing back to the 8th century BC. You'll experience an impressive blend of Venetian, French, and British architecture, a testament to the island's rich past. The town's bustling squares, charming cafes, and intricate alleyways paint a vivid picture of Corfu's vibrant culture and heritage.
From the rocky peninsula, the Old Fortress of Corfu Ionian offers an unobstructed vantage point for spectacular views. Built in the Byzantine era and later expanded by the Venetians, this fortress is a symbol of Corfu's storied past. While exploring the fortress, you'll stumble upon the Church of St. George, an ancient chapel built by the British, resembling an ancient Doric temple.
Consider a moped rental for a fun and flexible way to explore Corfu's diverse beaches, vibrant bars, and tantalizing eateries. Do remember to obtain an international driver's license, as Greece mandates it for operating a motor vehicle.
When hunger strikes after all your exploration, treat yourself at our recommended beach spots, restaurants, and bars that offer stunning views and delicious local cuisine:
Our chosen haven, Kontokali Bay Resort & Spa, is a delightful family-oriented retreat perched on the shores of the Ionian Sea. This resort commands stunning vistas of the mountain ranges of Albania and Greece, providing a perfect backdrop for relaxation. One of its many attractive features is its exclusive beach area where you can enjoy the sun and sand in privacy.
The resort's highlight, at least for me, was the starlit swimming experience, a truly magical plunge into the night under a canopy of twinkling stars.
When arranging your stay, consider taking advantage of the hotel's car service for your transfer from the airport. Although the journey is a bit lengthy, the comfort and convenience make it worth considering.
When planning your stay in Corfu, research is key. Some accommodations might be a considerable distance from the airport, which could affect your transit plans. Always check the location and available transport options to ensure a smooth, hassle-free trip.
After a two-night sojourn in Corfu, we boarded a KerkyraLines ferry across the Channel of Kerkyra to Igoumenitsa, venturing further into the mountains to explore Zagori.
