Discover the best of Amsterdam with tips on top attractions, activities, and places to stay.
Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is a city where historic charm meets modern vibrancy. Famous for its picturesque canals, renowned museums, and lively neighborhoods, Amsterdam has something to offer every traveler. Whether you're wandering through the charming streets of Jordaan, admiring world-class art at the Rijksmuseum, or enjoying a serene canal cruise, this city delivers an experience like no other. After visiting Amsterdam several times, these are my top recommendations for things to do and the best places to stay.
Anne Frank House: One of Amsterdam’s most powerful and moving historical sites, the Anne Frank House offers a glimpse into the secret annex where Anne and her family hid during World War II. Tickets sell out quickly, so be sure to book well in advance if you plan to visit.
Heineken Experience: A self-guided tour that takes about 1.5 hours, offering an interactive look at the history and brewing process of Heineken. Along the way, you’ll hear from live guides or use the official app for more insights. The best part? At the end of the tour, you’ll get to enjoy two beers—and even have the chance to design your own custom bottle!
Rock the City: A boat tour by Heineken, perfect for continuing the experience after the Heineken Experience tour. The boat departs just across from the brewery and you cruise through Amsterdam’s scenic canals.
The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes): A charming and trendy district in the heart of Amsterdam, The Nine Streets is perfect for strolling, shopping, and café-hopping. Lined with boutique shops, vintage stores, and cozy cafés
The Vondelpark: Amsterdam’s largest and most famous park, Vondelpark is a green oasis in the heart of the city, perfect for a stroll or bike ride.
Coffee Shops in Amsterdam: A visit to an Amsterdam coffee shop is a unique experience—and not for the caffeine! Unlike traditional cafés, these spots are known for their laid-back vibe and cannabis offerings. Whether you're curious or just want to soak in the atmosphere, it's worth stopping by for the experience.
Those Dam Boat Guys Tour: A more intimate and laid-back alternative to the larger canal tours. Hop on a smaller boat, bring your own drinks, and enjoy a cruise through Amsterdam’s iconic canals.
Rijksmuseum: Home to some of the most famous Dutch masterpieces, the Rijksmuseum is a must-visit for art and history lovers. From Rembrandt’s The Night Watch to Vermeer’s The Milkmaid, this museum showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Netherlands.
The Red Light District: One of Amsterdam’s most infamous and historic neighborhoods, the Red Light District is a mix of old-world charm, nightlife, and curiosity. Beyond the neon lights and window displays, you’ll find centuries-old architecture, lively bars, and hidden gems worth exploring. Whether you're just passing through or diving into its unique culture, it's a one-of-a-kind experience in the heart of the city.
Royal Palace Amsterdam: One of the Netherlands' most significant landmarks, this Seventeenth-Century palace is the largest and most prestigious building from its era. Interestingly, it was originally built as Amsterdam’s town hall before becoming a royal residence.
Grand Café Restaurant 1e Klas: Hidden inside Amsterdam Central Station on the second floor, this historic café was once the first-class waiting room for train passengers. The interior is a beautiful throwback to the past, featuring elegant decor—and even a live parrot adding to the charm. While the food is decent, the unique atmosphere and history make it well worth a visit.
Kikkie van de Prinsensluis: A charming canal-side spot perfect for drinks and people-watching. If you stop by, don’t miss the cheese croquette sandwich—it’s absolutely delicious!
Pancakes Amsterdam: A must-visit for authentic Dutch pancakes—so good that I found myself coming back multiple times during my trip! With several locations across the city, it’s an easy and delicious stop no matter where you are.
Café De Groene Vlinder: A cozy corner café with a relaxed vibe. I tried the brie sandwich with walnuts and honey, and it was absolutely delicious!
Bagels & Beans: A cute café specializing in fresh bagels and great coffee.
Cannibale Royale: Tucked away in a hidden alley, this spot comes alive after dark with smoky flavors and an edgy atmosphere. The decor leans into the creepy and eclectic, featuring eerie details like baby dolls scattered throughout. The food was delicious, and if you go, don’t miss the watermelon salad—it’s a must-try!
Winkel 43: Home to the best apple pie in Amsterdam—and trust me, it lives up to the hype! Be prepared for long lines, but it’s absolutely worth the wait.
The Flying Dutchman: Located on the second floor, is a cocktail bar that is the cocktail bar in the heart of Amsterdam. Its focus is on (neo-)classic cocktails and features the largest backbar of theNetherlands with over 800 unique spirits.
Brouwerij ‘t IJ: The canal-side location. The setting right beneath the city’s biggest windmill. Our windmill taproom is located in the same former bathhouse that also houses our first brewery, right under Amsterdam’s biggest windmill.
Proeflokaal‘t Blauwe Theehuis: Taproom ‘t Blauwe Theehuis is located in the middle of the Vondelpark. Enjoy the Amsterdam vibe on our sun-drenched terrace. A bustling oasis where you can enjoy a good cup of coffee, delicious sandwiches, pizzas, all kind of snacks, and freshly tapped beers from Brouwerij ‘t IJ all day long.
Sir Albert Hotel: A Stylish Stay in De Pijp
After visiting Amsterdam a few times, I can confidently say that Sir Albert is one of my favorite places to stay. While it can be on the pricier side, the location and overall experience make it well worth it.
Sir Adam Hotel: A Trendy Alternative Across the River
For those looking for something with a little more edge, Sir Adam offers a totally different vibe. Located across the river in the same building as A'DAM Lookout, this hotel is perfect for music lovers and trendsetters.
Both Sir Albert and Sir Adam bring something special to the Amsterdam experience, whether you're looking for a boutique luxury stay in De Pijp or a trendy, music-inspired retreat across the river.
