A Day Trip to Cold Spring: Escaping the Concrete Jungle for The Hudson Valley

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of New York City, Cold Spring, a small town nestled in the Hudson Valley, offers the perfect retreat. Just a short train ride away, this charming village is ideal for city dwellers seeking a day of hiking, local exploration, and a taste of nature.

Getting There

Our adventure began at Grand Central Station, where we hopped on a train bound for Cold Spring. As a first-timer on this journey, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the experience was smoother than I imagined. For those planning a visit, especially during the holidays or peak fall season, I highly recommend catching an early train—seats can fill up fast.

A handy resource for your trip is the MTA TrainTime app. It’s a one-stop shop for checking train schedules, buying tickets, and more. After a scenic hour-and-a-half ride along the Hudson River, we arrived in Cold Spring.

As with many small-town train stops, you step off the train and find yourself in the heart of the village, just steps away.

Hiking in Cold Spring: Bull Hill

One of Cold Spring’s biggest draws is its proximity to several hiking trails, all within walking distance of Main Street. We opted for the Bull Hill (Mt. Taurus) trail, a popular choice among locals and visitors alike.

Exploring Cold Spring: Eat, Drink, & Shop

After the hike, we spent some time exploring Cold Spring’s quaint Main Street. The town is full of charming shops, cozy cafes, and unique local spots.

Barber & Brew: This speakeasy-style bar is hidden in the back of a barbershop and is the perfect place to grab a local craft beer. The ambiance is as unique as the drinks, making it a must-visit.

Cozy Corner Café: A delightful spot right on Main Street, this café lives up to its name. I indulged in the Pink Ricotta Toast, which was absolutely delicious—a perfect post-hike treat.

Old Souls: If you’ve forgotten any hiking gear or need last-minute supplies, Old Souls is the place to go. This shop has everything from outdoor essentials to local goods.

Cold Spring is a perfect day trip destination for anyone looking to escape the city and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just in the mood for a leisurely day of exploration, this Hudson Valley gem has something for everyone
